Cause Description:
The GLBTQ Suicide Prevention Coalition’s main goal is the prevention of suicide in the GLBTQ youth community. We also provide intervention and post-vention service coordination. In association with coalition membership, we have created an effective program that consists of a national awareness campaign, speakers bureau and the dissemination of information that empowers everyone to ask for help in times of crisis, as well as how to respond to crisis and a plan for a structured and adequate resource database. In Reality That Means ... We take information from resource groups all over the nation and create our own set of GLBTQ information that we disseminate on a national level. We do that a number of ways; the first is that we give back to the organizations that gave us initial information, a packet that then becomes their GLBTQ resource packet and they hand it out through their channels; secondly, we have designed an awareness campaign that infiltrates college campuses across the nation within a five year (goal) period of time. That campaign will consist of an event on every college campus to meet a 200 mile radius of entire USA exposure. We will start the one-day events with a suicide prevention day training, followed by a reception and then a final event. We hope to bring in big names for these events to ensure that we adequate attendance. At the final event we will hand out the Yellow Ribbon Project information, as well as QPR Training (question/persuade/refer) by Dr. Paul Quinnette via the Plea For Peace (2-CD) CD. Each CD has interactive QPR training available from any computer. We will also hand out a packet of information and sponsor products to each participant. This type of event allows us to reach all levels of constituency: Prevention training will reach educators, professionals, ministers, community members, etc. and the final event will reach a more youth-generated crowd. Therefore, we have accomplished our goal in making a community aware of GLBTQ friendly resources, suicide prevention measures, intervention measures and postvention services and the 1-800-Suicide Network National Hotline.
