Cause Description:
Founded in 1896, the United States Surfing Committee (USSC) is the oldest IRS tax-exempt 501(c)(3) tax-deductible nonprofit youth sports surfing governing organization in the USA with three missions: (i) annual operation of the "All American Surfing Competitions" creating "All American Surfers" since 1896; (ii) providing financial support to top American surfer athletes to train for world class competition; and, (iii) providing underprivileged children with surfing equipment so they can enjoy our oldest American sport - Hawaiians were up and surfing before Columbus left Spain for the New World. In 1960 the USSC initiated a Worldwide Movement in Olympic Surfing and on 25 May 1981, Dr. Gary Filosa, II, (listed in "Who's Who in America" and "Who's Who in the World"), USSC president, made the historic first offical presentation of the credentials of surfing to be an Olympic sport in Lausanne, Switzerland before the International Olympic Committee (IOC). All the great names in surfing have served on the Board of Governors of the USSC: Duke Kahanamoku, Mrs. Duke Kahanamoku (was USSC chairman for 31 years until her death in 1997), Tom Blake - inventor of the surfboard skeg; Dr. Hugh Bradner, Father of the Wetsuit; Julian Roosevelt, IOC Member from the USA; Douglas Roby, IOC Member from the US; United States Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska; The Honorable Bob Livingston, former presumptive Spoeaker of the US House of Representatives; Mike Mann,publisher, "Surf" magazine; US Senator George Aiken of Vermont; Governor John Davis Lodge of Connecticut; The Princess Francesca Braggiotti; His Royal Highness, the Prince of Varra; Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco and her brother,Jack Kelley, president, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC); Governor Pat Brown of California; US Senator Spark Matsunaga of Hawai'i; The Reverend Dr. Abraham Akaka of Hawai'i was USSC Chaplain for 22 years (1976-1998)until his death in 1999; The Reverend Dr. Richard Unsworth, current USSC Chaplain and an Overseer at the Harvard Divinity School; James Jones, greatest professional surfer alive; Helen hayes; Clare Booth Luce; Governor George Gibson of Vermont; AAU President David Rivenes; The Reverend Dr. Charles A. Parmiter, Headmaster, The Iolani School, Honolulu, USSC Chaplain for 28 years (1947-1975), Dick Button, James Franciscus, and many many more.
