Cause Description:
Camp Kydnie is a camp designed specifically for children with kidney disease, who are at least 6 years of age. The goal of Camp Kydnie is to provide a normal camping experience, allowing for health and physical limitations, and with an emphasis on positive self-image, independence and self-assurance. Camp Kydnie Staff includes experienced, trained counselors and health care professionals who are on-site 24 hours a day. These professionals strive to make the camp experience memorable while keeping in mind the camper's medical needs. Camp Kydnie has a unique history that orignated with the vision of a doctor who saw a need for a camp for kids with kidney disease. Dr. Oscar Oberkircher, a pediatric nephrologist at Geisinger Medical Center, knew that children with kidney disease needed a chance to be together in fun and friendship. Camp Kyndie became a reality in 1992 as a day camp, then added overnight camping in 1993, and expanded to a full week in 1996. Today, Camp Kydnie is a week-long overnight camp full of games, hay rides, arts and craft, fishing and a variety of other camp experiences, held at Camp Victory, a unique camp facility designed for children with healthcare needs, Millville, PA. Although Dr. "O" died in 1999, his spirit lives on through the dedication of the many volunteers who staff the camp.
