Cause Description:
Based in Jakarta, Indonesia, XSProject is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the lives of poor families living in Jakarta’s trash picker communities. XSProject works directly with the trash pickers at the Cirendeu open garbage dump. Unlike typical trash pickers who live away from the garbage dumps, the 100+ families of the Cirendeu open garbage dump live, cook, wash and care for their children on top of the heaps of trash. XSProject believes that breaking the generational cycle of trash picking is the best way to a better life for the Cirendeu trash picker community. We focus on three areas of greatest need: EDUCATION: XSProject commits to paying for 12 years of education for the children and youths of trash picker families. HEALTH: XSHealth seeks first to address prevention by educating the families in nutrition, family planning, establishing good sanitary habits and by vaccinating the entire community against life threatening illness and disease. COMMUNITY: Our XSCommunity program purchases non-biodegradable trash from the trash pickers. Trash pickers normally would not select these plastic bags and pouches because there is no market to sell them. When XSProject purchases them, however, we provide much needed extra income to the trash pickers. With these plastics, XSProject creates new consumer products, thus removing the bags from the waste stream and educating consumers about how trash affects the environment and the community.
