By fulfilling the needs of our clients, Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City, Inc. (NHSNYC) has achieved significant progress toward realizing our mission: To revitalize underserved communities by creating and preserving affordable housing and providing opportunities for homeownership education, financial assistance and community leadership. Working in partnership with government and business, we are led by local residents and guided by local needs. We enable low-and-moderate-income families to accumulate wealth through the sustainable acquisition and preservation of homeownership, by successfully providing the following services: home buyers education, individual pre-purchase counseling, downpayment assistance, foreclosure prevention counseling, home maintenance training, as well as grants and loans for home repairs. Since our incorporation in 1982, NHSNYC has leveraged investments totaling over $2 billion in low-and-moderate-income communities, including by facilitating more than $1.5 billion in affordable mortgage financing to help 7,000 families responsibly purchase their first home. We also educated 175,886 clients about effective strategies for pursuing homeownership (81,148) and averting foreclosure (94,738), while successfully rehabilitating 451 properties—including 377 acquired by the City of New York through in-rem foreclosure. NHSNYC serves all New York City residents but focuses our work with low-and-moderate-income families, by operating offices in these six targeted communities: the North Bronx, the South Bronx, Northern Queens, Bedford-Stuyvesant, East Flatbush and Canarsie.
