Cause Description:
We are a group of activists working to provide more humane living conditions for the Oregon Zoo’s eight elephants. The elephants suffer from TB, chronic joint and foot problems, and other maladies related to cramped conditions and lack of exercise. Our first priority is to see the most senior elephant, Packy released to sanctuary. Second is to demand that the Oregon Zoo cease its involvement in the captive breeding business. This lucrative business does nothing to help preserve elephant populations in the wild. Rather it creates infant elephants destined for miserable lives in industries which exploit them. Third is to insist that the Metro/Zoo authorities honor the intent of the 2008 zoo bond measure by creating a multi acre off-site preserve, which would become a retirement home for the elephants. This would help to significantly improve their mental and physical health.
