STEPS To End Family Violence is dedicated to empowering families and communities through innovative strength-based programs that promote healing and social change. We are a progressive community organization that values justice and diversity. STEPS provides a holistic range of services to survivors of gender-based violence and women at the nexis of trauma and incarceration. Each year we reach over 5,000 adults, teens and children throughout the 5 boroughs of New York City. Founded in 1986 by Sr. Mary Nerney as a court advocacy program to work with battered women defendants, STEPS to End Family Violence is known for our groundbreaking Alternative to Incarceration program, unique in both NYC and the country, providing comprehensive services to survivors of trauma and abuse charged with crimes related to their histories of abuse. Also unique to STEPS is our Teen Accountability Program, providing a court mandated accountability program for teen men charged with domestic violence- related crimes for the first time. We also address prevention through RAPP (Relationship Abuse Prevention Program). Since the mid 90's STEPS has worked with high school teens, providing counseling and education on domestic and dating violence and prevention. We are now present at 9 high school and middle school campuses in four boroughs. Through our seven programs, we offer individual and group counseling for survivors of gender-based violence; Re Entry programming for women returning to the community after incarceration; civil legal services; counseling for children & teens; community outreach and training; court advocacy; and legal services.
