Founded in 1898 MDIBL connects science, environment and health. MDIBL’s reMAINE Healthy collaborative to prevent kidney disease is a unique translational research program that reaches across Maine to tackle one of the top state, national and world healthcare priorities. In the US chronic kidney disease affects 26 million adults and over $42 billion is spent annually treating patients with the disease. It is a major diagnostic challenge, as people with early stages of the disease tend not to have any symptoms. The most common cause of kidney disease is diabetes and the Center for Disease Control predicts that 1 in 3 people in the US will develop diabetes by the year 2050. Scientists and physicians from four Maine institutions: MDIBL, The Jackson Laboratory, Maine Medical Center and its research institution are working to translate laboratory discoveries in mice and zebrafish into improved therapeutic tools for patients. This novel, collaborative approach is cost effective and has dramatically increased the speed of discovery. reMAINE Healthy is making important strides in the search to diagnose, treat or prevent chronic kidney disease in humans.
