Cause Description:
The mission of the Grief Resource Center , a 501c3 not for profit, is dedicated to providing comprehensive services to people in the Greater New Orleans area who have experienced a significant loss. This is done by providing programs that promote healthy life coping skills. The Grief Resource Center currently operates the following programs at no cost to the community: Nursing Home Reminiscence Programs: Reminiscence Therapy (RT) group sessions are currently being offered in 55 nursing homes and assisted living centers throughout the New Orleans metro area. Reminiscence groups typically are effective in improving mood, cognition, socialization, and well being of the residents. Grief Support Groups for Adults, Teenagers, and Children: The grief support groups offered in the Greater New Orleans area are open to any family member or caregiver that has experienced the death of a loved one or any other significant loss. Continuing Education-CEU Workshops for Health Care Workforce: The Grief Resource Center is a resource for social workers, doctors, nurses, case mangers and other individuals who require information on integrative health care, palliative health care, grief, and healing. Continuing education workshops are offered on the following topics in locations throughout greater New Orleans in hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living centers. The workshops offered cover: Grief and Recovery; Anxiety Disorders, Diagnosis and Clinical Intervention; Palliative Care and Hospice; Ethical Issues for Social Workers and Depressive Disorders, Diagnosis and Clinical Intervention. Advanced Illness Management Program: The AIM program is an assistance program offered through the Akula Foundation Grief Resource Center and will primarily focus on the health care management of older adults. The purpose of the AIM program is to work with patients and their families who are currently under the care of home health but are dealing with the end stages of a serious disease. AIM focuses on home based, customized case management, social and spiritual support and education. Children’s Bereavement Camp : Camp Swan is a three-day and two-night camp for children 7-12 years old who have suffered a loss and could benefit from therapeutic experiences. Weekly Radio Broadcast of Health Care Issues Program: Community health issues are discussed on the air as a public service.
