Delaware Shakespeare Festival

Wilmington, Delaware

Cause Description:
The Delaware Shakespeare Festival of Wilmington, Delaware is a blossoming annual tradition offering affordable and professional quality productions of Shakespeare’s works in a family-friendly festival environment. Founded in 2003, DSF currently holds its annual Festival over 16 days each summer on the grounds of the historic Rockwood Mansion Park. The Company strives to make classical theatre accessible to the community throughout the festival by employing talented actors and technicians, offering pre-show orientations and keeping the price of admission reasonable. Add the casual outdoor environment in which patrons are encouraged to bring a blanket and a picnic basket—and it’s no wonder the Festival increases in popularity every year. It also helps explain one reviewer’s assessment of the Festival as “a pleasant evening of outdoor theater” and “a definite bargain.” A typical night at the Festival begins one hour prior to curtain with a Show Orientation. Intended to make the Bard more accessible to the community, this orientation enhances the audience’s comprehension of the Main Production. Next, the Pre-Show warms up the audience with a satirical look at another Shakespearean masterpiece by dismantling it and hastily taping it back together into an original 15-minute comic romp. Finally, as dusk sets in, the audience dines on their picnic dinners and the professional performers take their positions on the stage to tell an age-old story. Delaware Shakespeare Festival enriches our community by presenting classical theatre in an approachable, enjoyable manner. Through informative Orientations, comical Pre-Shows and a casual theatre environment, DSF succeeds in translating a 400 year old text into a comprehensible, culturally enriching and entertaining opportunity for an audience of all ages. The mission of the Delaware Shakespeare Festival is to create professional theatre and educational programs in order to further the understanding and appreciation of Shakespeare’s works for the residents and friends of the State of Delaware.
