The Michael Coss Brain Injury Foundation

Coquitlam, British Columbia

Cause Description:
There is over 1 Million new cases of Brain Injury each year in North America. Annually, over 6,000 Canadians become PERMANENTLY DISABLED after a traumatic brain injury. Each year, more than 14,000 Canadians die from stroke...About 300,000 are living with the devastating effect of stroke. Brain Injury is the No.1 KILLER and DISABLER of people under the age of 45 in Canada. Michael Coss ( the Founder of The Michael Coss Brain Injury Foundation) suffers from traumatic brain injury and Tram Doan suffers from non-traumatic brain Injury (Hemorrhagic stroke). Both, thanks to financial support from friends, co-workers and family have access to Hyperbaric Oxygenation Therapy treatments that have contributed and are still, today, contributing to their recovery. Both are coming a long way thanks to HBOT. HBOT are expensive treatments and HBOT treatments used for BRAIN INJURY are not part of the 13 medical conditions approved to be treated through HBOT. The cost of each treatment ranges from $100 to $150. Each brain injury survivor is a different case, each brain injury is different depending on the extent of the damages and the location in the brain. The effects of a brain damage can be as diverse as aphasia ( communication/speech problems), memory loss, concentration issues, paralysis, hemiplegia, blindness, visual field loss...etc. Although small improvements can be noticed after 10 to 20 treatments, an average of 40 treatments is a minimum in most cases to start seeing significant results, keeping in mind that many more ongoing treatments are necessary to allow the brain which is an extremely complex and fantastic machine to awaken dormant neurons located in the area surrounding the direct damage, build new tissues, new connections that will be used to compensate for the part of the brain that has been severed. Brain Injury can happen to anybody, at anytime regardless of age, sex or medical condition. Traumatic Brain Injury: Fall on the head - Motor Vehicle accident - Ski / Ice skating accident - Skateboard accident...etc Non-Traumatic/Acquired Brain Injury: Ischemic stroke Arterovenous Malformation > hemorrhagic stroke Aneurism > hemorrhagic stroke Heart attack, Vascular disruption, Intracranial Tumor, Seizure disorders, Airway obstruction, Chocking, Near-drowning, Electrical shock, Lightening strike, Blood loss, Artery impingement, Toxic exposures to chemical and gases...and more It has been proven that HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygenation Therapy) can dramatically help in the recovery process in the case of brain injuries. But because it is not covered by our MSP (Medical Service Plan) or any private insurance, it makes it practically out of reach for thousands of survivors who simply cannot afford the costs of such treatments. As an unacceptable result, the survivors are left with nothing but NO HOPE to recovery! The mission of The Michael Coss Brain Injury Foundation is to provide survivors of Brain Injuries, help and support through a unique approach of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in order to improve their quality of life and create a better future. Michael Coss was and is still fortunate to have this financial support that gives him access to these costly treatments. Now, HE WANTS TO GIVE BACK TO OTHERS!
