Outdoor education and adventures for school-age children (school break camps, home-school program, field trips) Mission/Vision: Schoolhouse of Wonder inspires children from all walks of life to create a world where people respect themselves, one another and the communities in which they live. We ignite imaginations, build self-confidence and teach respect by connecting children to the wonders of nature. Values Statement Schoolhouse of Wonder is committed to helping each child draw strength and inspiration from the wonders of nature. Our approach integrates essential aspects of successful child development encouraging creativity, confidence and respect. We execute our mission through our values: - Community – We see our community as a collection of communities. Whereas geographically our arms reach just past the outskirts of Durham, it is in small circles of people we will work the hardest to inspire awareness of and advocacy for the value of our connection to nature and the historical paths we walk. - Respect – We will exhibit the behavior of the person we strive to be. We will encourage each other to appreciate opinions that differ from our own and to be aware of how our actions and words affect others. Most importantly, we will act as if our sons and daughters are in the room. - Diversity – We recognize the inherent value of diverse cultures. We will seek ways to think and act more inclusively to reflect the communities we serve. - Sense of Wonder – We believe that it is through self-discovery that self-confidence emerges. We will challenge ourselves to try new things even if it makes us uncomfortable. - Nature/Environment – Nature has many stories to share, many lessons to teach. We will introduce all our constituencies to their valued connection to the land, sky, trees and river — illuminating the wonder of the environment in which they live. - Learning – Our programs, whether through structured exploration or unstructured play, will help students develop critical thinking and effective communications skills. We will encourage children to explore their natural and cultural surroundings, learning to respect that which they understand and that which they do not.
