Pennsylvania SPCA
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Cause Description:
Founded in 1867, the Pennsylvania SPCA is the second oldest
animal welfare organization in the nation and the largest and
most comprehensive in Pennsylvania, with a no-kill
philosophy, 97% live release rate and a track record of
progressive programs benefiting animals and people. Each
year, the Pennsylvania SPCA saves thousands of animals from
cruelty and neglect, finds them new homes, and offers their
owners low-cost, high-quality veterinary care. We are 100%
donor-funded with zero reliance on federal, state or local
dollars. In 2013, eighty-two cents of every dollar went
directly to protect and save animals through our programs
and services.
Our five main service areas include:
(1) Humane law enforcement; 13 officers covering 21
counties; in 2013, we investigated more than 11,000
investigations of animal cruelty and neglect and rescued 1400
animals from abusive situations
(2) Adoption of homeless animals; in 2013, we adopted over
6,300 animals into new homes, contributing to a 97% live
release rate.
(3) Spay-and-neuter programs; in 2013, our veterinarians
performed more than 9,000 s/n surgeries, preventing over
110,000 unwanted animals from being born.
(4) Low-cost public veterinary clinic; in 2013, more than
26,000 animals were seen in our outpatient wellness clinics;
one of our unique features is a rabies/distemper vaccine clinic
on Wednesdays and Saturdays;
(5) Humane education; presentations to schools, civic and
community groups across the region to promote compassion
and respect for animals; partnerships to enhance the
community.
