Reducing food waste one pumpkin at a time. We provide the general public access to a network of donation sites accepting food stuffs and non-food items via our website. We educate by highlighting opportunities to reduce waste overall - food and non-food items -- and impacts of food waste. PFPF started in 2017 with 10 donation sites in Loudoun County, Virginia with the aim of reducing food waste one pumpkin at a time. Through conversations with donation sites, donors and others, it was clear there was a need and a desire for these services. With each passing year, the list of accepted items expanded. Today, we serve over 500 communities in 39 states and growing every year. With a conservative estimate of over 700 tons diverted in 2022, we are just getting started and see enormous opportunity to further our impact. We strive to divert edible food stuffs that would otherwise be discarded in landfills to animals for feed or for compost by providing the general public a network of donation sites accepting such food stuffs. Through this network, non-food items are also diverted from landfills such as hay/straw bails, holiday trees, and kiddie pools. Our educational efforts intend to reduce food waste before it starts through tips on meal planning, buying less, and composting scraps. Education efforts also shed light on the impacts of food waste on the world around us - starting in the communities we live in. Through this work, we strive to build, bring together, and inspire communities to help one another through service to others - both human and animal. We also hope to highlight the hundreds of small businesses in our communities that — through their ingenuity, creativity, and grit — provide us with amazing food, hand-made products, and so much more.
