Wolf Mountain Sanctuary

Shanta Wanagi (Sacred Heart Angel) came to the WMS on April 29, 2002. She was 14 days old.

Wolf Mountain Sanctuary is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to the preservation, protection and proper management of wolves in the wild and in captivity. Our purpose and ultimate goal is to save these great noble animals from extinction. Wolf Mountain is home to 18 wolves that were rescued and will live their lives out at the Sanctuary. We receive no funding and rely completely on donations and adoptions. Visitors can interact with our wolves (very few sanctuaries allow this). Our belief is that since our wolves will live with us for the rest of their lives they will receive love and attention from the many humans that cross their paths.

Balto came to WMS from East Texas in late 2013.

iGive member Ellen dropped us this little love note about the Cause:
“Tonya Littlewolf is the director of the Wolf Mountain Sanctuary. This person loves and cares for the wolves, so much she brings them home with her at times… so they won’t be alone. Tonya is a great humanitarian… She makes sure they are fed, healthy and is always working on a better environment for them. I love her for what she does in caring and helping the wolves. When they are sick, she tries to get a vet and ask the people to help donate to pay for their treatment…..Tonya is the best…..”

When we see something cool and good, we like to share. Periodically, we’ll highlight a company or project that we think is interesting and shareworthy. They probably aren’t ready yet to be an iGive store, but that shouldn’t stop you from thinking about their efforts.

This month we’re introducing you to Karma Trik. Karma Trik is a clothing item for women that can be worn at least 15 ways.  This innovative  product is versatile, simple and sustainable. Not only is the company mission “buy less, use more,” but the cloth for this project is made from plastic bottles in Haiti, a country with no other recycling infrastructure, providing jobs in an economy that is rebuilding. The cloth is brought to the U.S. where it’s crafted artfully. It is sewn at an employee owned co-op in North Carolina.

Take a look at Karma Trik. It’s cool, it’s new, and sounds useful.  It’s an Indiegogo project, so if you like it, read about how you can support its development, the risks associated with the project, and maybe get your very own!

Do you wanna get out there and DANCE?!?  Because now’s your chance!  Zumba Fitness is running an ongoing fundraiser to support research on ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which leaves people unable to move.  To fight back, Zumba has orchestrated a two-pronged approach to their initiative, called Together We Dance.

Zumba is selling Together We Dance gear and with every sale donates 30% of the profits to a non-profit called Augie’s Quest (focused on research for ALS).  The big fundraiser isn’t merchandise however, it’s dancing!  Zumbathon events take place all over the world, hosted by a certified instructor, from which 75% of all ticket sales is donated to Augie’s Quest.  To date, Zumba has raised $40,000 for the fight against ALS.logo

Knots of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hand-made knitted and crocheted hats for those experiencing traumatic hair loss due to cancer or other life threatening illnesses.  Knots of Love’s goal is to “warm the hearts and heads” of patients in treatment centers and hospitals across the United States.

Since 2007, Knots of Love has been donating hats, scarves, prayer shawls, PIC line covers, and neonatal blankets for premature newborns free of charge.  It is built on a network of volunteers who “tirelessly knit and crochet only the finest quality of caps”, using specially tested soft yarns to ensure optimum comfort for those who have lost their hair.

While it seems like a small thing, giving a hat to someone in need can brighten patients’ day-to-day lives and have a big impact.  As Christine Fabiani recounts, “I have seen the tears of joy when patients are handed a cap made from Knots of Love. It puts a smile on their faces and the wind in my sails.”
